Poor Microsoft

What about tablet sales and Microsoft. Comparing the last three months of 2011 to the last three months of 2012, for 2012 apparently tablet device sales have jumped up by around 75%. For that 2012 period Apple shipped just under 23 million iPads, Samsung around 8 million Galaxy tablets, Amazon around 6 million of its various Kindle devices, and just over 3 million Asus / Google Nexus 7s. What about Microsoft? Well, what about Microsoft.... With all its hype and publicity, it shipped less than 900,000 Surface units.   Oh dear, the phrase 'could do better' springs to mind!

BlackBerry

So we've just had the new BlackBerry announcement. I've used Windows Mobile phones before and they've performed in a perfectly competent fashion, but were rather 'blown away' when I got my iPhone 3GS (and discovered the ease and use of Apps). We then had the Windows 8 phone release which I followed but it did nothing for me. However the run up to this BlackBerry release had got me interested. I've never been a BlackBerry user and have had no real desire or need for one. However I've seen many students around where I work use them and they seem happy with…

Dropbox.

Steve Ballmer has dismissed Dropbox as a 'fine little start-up' with only 100 million users. In a way I can live with that, Dropbox only having one hundred million is nothing compared to the billion Office users. However a vast number of those Dropbox users are students at schools, colleges and universities, and they like it. They also use Office, but only use Office because they have to, not because they like it! However today's university graduates will move into the adult world of work, commerce, industry and so on, and many will take their Dropbox experience with them. I'll…

End of Year (and Formula Student Germany).

It's come round to the the end of the academic year again. Graduations finished a while ago, so another batch of (now ex-) students have been let out into the real world. A few undergraduate students still here doing summer placements and projects of various sorts, and also a sudden (temporary) jump in student population as those doing exam re-sits are undergoing that wonderful ritual! (Mutters something about if only they had bothered not to get so pissed quite so often then they'd probably have passed on first attempt!) The Formula Student crowd are back from a successful Germany competition…

Formula Student Results.

Just seen the UK (Silverstone) Formula Student results for Strathclyde. Overall position; 20th out of just over 100. All things considered that's actually not too bad. After all, earlier on in the year there had been a major fire which knocked out of commission their workshop, and for about a month they couldn't even get to their part-constructed chassis or to any of their tools, equipment or machinery. Eventually they were allowed access to their area, not to work but to recover what they could, and then shift that across to some alternative workshop space that they had set up…

Formula Student

Strathclyde’s Formula Student guys have just had their ‘launch day’ for their 2012 car. What they manage to produce, and (especially when compared to the opposition) on a very tight budget, is quite amazing. This year even more so considering a major fire in February which trashed the building that houses their work and machine shop area. (This sort of thing just shows the importance of having contingency plans, those unexpected things - totally out of your control - can happen at any time!) However very quickly emergency alternative facilities were organised and new plans and schedules drawn up. It’s…

What’s Happened!

Oh dear, what's happened. The last entry was for the end of January, and now it's the end of June. At the start of February there was a major fire at work. This totally disrupted things, interfered with student study, destroyed large amounts of research work, threatened employment, and generally caused havoc. Add to this a supervisor taking early retirement at short notice, but then for various health reasons leaving even earlier (and before any proper hand-over of tasks) meant that life has been in a bit of a state of confusion and disorder. However, after nearly 5 months, things…

Students’ Union

For the first time in ages (4 years?) I've headed into Strathclyde's Students' Union on a Friday evening. It used to be absolutely heaving, 'TFI Friday' got the guys and girls in for some serious socialising and with a fantastic atmosphere.  However people come and go and a new crowd has replaced the old and TFI appears no more. A shame in a way, but everything has its timeI guess.

Second Semester Stress Time

It's now the start the second semester. For those in their final year it means there's only 12 academic weeks left before they're given 'the order of the boot' and have to find a life for themselves. For many this will be the first time they will be removed from under the protective blanket that being within a school / education institution provides. Now, for the first time in their lives, when someone asks 'where will you be in 6 months / a year's time', they don't know. Plus now we are passed the New Year, the 'Oh, but it's…
